This year our researchers are continueing to update the sperm whale catalogue and to record sounds produced by sperm whales.
Thanks to the idrophones installed on the keels of our boats, they can record all the vocalizations of sperm whales and other cetaceans spottet during a trip. Hydrophones are useful to assess to presence/absence of these animals in Bleik Canyon. This is a very good aid for the skipper in order to get closer the sperm whales when they come back to the surface.
Once on land again, after a very accurate data computing, they can infer the different types of clicks and hence the behaviour of the animal during the dive. Creaks, for example, are a good indication of how much time the sperm whale spends hunting: each creak is an attempt to capture a potential prey, i.e. a squid. Sounds change according to social behaviours, when females and males are present and when different groups meet. Moreover they can estimate the length of the animal according to an index that is calculated on the delay the sounds are received.
After about three weeks of work, we managed to record around 60 sperm whales and a group of killer whales....... and this is just the beginning!!!
