| "Luca Rho Ariwoola" has a new friend!!
During the afternoon of the 16th July Luca Rho Ariwoola was seen twice in the companionship of a single White-Beaked Dolphin (Lagenorinco albirostris) that swam around him while on the surface. When the Sperm Whale dived in the search of food, the dolphin waited for him at the surface and went close to the sperm whale when it appeared again. This behavior continued until the 17th afternoon, when the dolphin was last seen.
Our research team thinks that this unique interaction is due to the presence of orcas in the area, which are known to chase the White-Beaked Dolphins. This single individual might be a young one that got separated from its group and was approaching the sperm whale looking for protection from the orcas. White-Beaked Dolphins had not been seen in the area by Whale Safari for at least 5 years.
The following photographs show the Sperm Whale and the White-Beaked Dolphin together. |
