Practical information
We offer bird and whale watching tours year-round in Andenes, Vesterålen, with the main season from late May to mid-September. Please note: The Puffin season runs from May to late August, but bird watching tours continue throughout the year with other species.
Before departure, you will receive practical information about the vessel, the excursion, and, most importantly, onboard safety. Information is provided in several languages, depending on the nationalities of the guests. Your ticket also includes a self-guided tour of our new Whale Exhibition, and access to evening lectures during the high season, where you can learn even more about whales and marine life.
Reception and check-in: Check-in takes place at The Whale Center, Hamnegata. 1 C. This is also where you´ll find the Whale Exhibition. and the lectures. After check-in you will receive an introduction to the whales, birds and the marine environment, along with a safety briefing. When necessary, information is provided in multiple languages.
If you would like to learn more about the species you may encounter before your trip, visit: our whales or our birds.
FACTORS AFFECTING THE DURATION OF A TOUR
- Weather and sea conditions: Strong winds and rough seas can make it more difficult to spot whale blows, listen to sperm whale clicks using hydrophones, and maintain cruising speed. Dense fog may also reduce visibility.
- Distance to shore: The further from the shore the whales are located, the longer the tour may last.
- Whale presence: If fewer whales are present in the area, it may take longer to locate them, potentially extending the tour duration.

CHECKLIST FOR YOUR TRIP:
- Warm and comfortable shoes (waterproof is a plus)
- Warm, water-repellent clothing
- Sunglasses
- Sunscreen
- Beanie or hat
- A small waterproof bag for camera or phone
WILDLIFE:
Remember, whales are wild animals! While we have a very high success rate for whale sightings, we cannot guarantee sightings on every trip. However, if no cetaceans are observed during your tour, you are welcome to join another trip free of charge on the first available departure - or any time in the future.
During the winter season, daylight hours are limited and we offer fewer departures. This does not make the experience any less special. Bird and whale species vary between seasons, which is why we highly recommend both summer and winter tours.
Other winter-activities in Andenes:
- Eagle Safari
- On-land activities: A guided nature and culture walk through the harbor.
- Evening excursions: Guided night walks in search of the Northern Lights.
